Cut Your Fuel Bills with the 2026 Kia Niro Family

The 2026 Kia Niro comes in three distinct versions — the Niro HEV, the Niro PHEV, and the Niro EV — each designed to lower what you spend on energy compared to a conventional gasoline vehicle. What separates them is how they do it and how much they can reduce. Here is a clear look at each variant's efficiency numbers and what they mean for a driver who fills up regularly.

Niro HEV — The No-Plug-In Starting Point

The Niro HEV is the simplest entry point into the Niro lineup's efficiency story. It uses a 1.6 L 4-cylinder GDI engine paired with a 43 hp permanent magnet synchronous electric motor. The battery charges through regenerative braking — no plugging in required. The result is a combined fuel economy of 4.4 L/100 km for LX, EX, and EX Premium trims, and 4.8 L/100 km for the SX.

Those numbers are the most fuel-efficient in Kia's 2026 hybrid lineup, and they hold up whether you're driving in stop-and-go traffic or on the highway. The 1.6 L engine shuts off at low speeds and during deceleration, allowing the electric motor to handle propulsion without burning fuel — a system that compounds savings over the course of a typical week of city driving.

The Niro HEV uses a 45 L fuel tank. At 4.4 L/100 km combined, a full tank covers approximately 1,023 km before refuelling.

  • 139 hp combined / 195 lb-ft combined torque
  • 4.4 L/100 km combined (LX / EX / EX Premium) | 4.8 L/100 km (SX)
  • FWD | 45 L fuel tank | No plug-in required
  • Green Zone Drive Mode maximizes EV mode in low-speed areas

Niro PHEV — Mostly Electric for Shorter Trips

The Niro PHEV takes the efficiency of the HEV further for drivers who can charge at home or at work. It uses a 1.6 L GDI engine paired with a larger electric motor and an 11.1 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, producing 180 hp combined and 195 lb-ft of torque. All-electric range is rated at up to 55 km — which covers the round-trip commute of many Canadian drivers without the engine turning on at all.

On a combined basis (gasoline and electric), the Niro PHEV is rated at 2.1 Le/100 km. On gasoline alone — after the battery is depleted — the fuel economy is 4.8 L/100 km. Total range on a full charge plus a full tank of gasoline is estimated at up to 835 km.

For a driver who commutes up to 55 km daily and charges overnight, most weekday driving happens at zero fuel cost. Weekend trips beyond battery range use the 1.6 L engine efficiently. The 37 L tank refuels quickly when needed.

  • 180 hp combined / 195 lb-ft combined
  • 55 km all-electric range
  • 2.1 Le/100 km combined (electric + gasoline) | 4.8 L/100 km (gasoline only)
  • Up to 835 km total range on a full charge + full tank
  • 11.1 kWh battery | 37 L fuel tank | FWD

Niro EV — No Fuel Bills, Full Stop

The Niro EV removes the fuel equation entirely. It uses a 201 hp permanent magnet AC synchronous motor and a 64.8 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, with a rated range of 407 km on a full charge. Energy consumption is rated at 1.9 Le/100 km city / 2.3 Le/100 km highway / 2.1 Le/100 km combined.

There is no engine, no fuel tank, and no oil to change. The only ongoing energy cost is electricity. The Niro EV supports Level 1 (120V), Level 2 (240V at 11 kW), and Level 3 DC fast charging (10–80% in approximately 43 minutes at a 350 kW charger). An included portable ICCB charging cable enables Level 1 home charging without additional hardware.

Cargo capacity behind the second row is 646 L, and 1,805 L with rear seats folded — consistent with the HEV and PHEV variants' external dimensions.

  • 201 hp / 188 lb-ft
  • 407 km range | 64.8 kWh battery | FWD
  • 2.1 Le/100 km combined
  • Level 3 DC fast charge: 10–80% in ~43 minutes (350 kW charger)
